Homemade Applesauce

DSC03347-2sq.jpg

Who doesn’t love applesauce? In this batch - I used Honeycrisp apples (my favorite to snack on if I had to choose!). You could definitely use any type of apple that you have on hand or better yet, a mix of apples! If you have any pears around, those can be nice to add as well! One of the things that I love most about cooking is keeping an open mind and staying creative with ingredients and trying out new things!

Homemade Applesauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • Apples (Use whatever type you have or your favorite! I used 3 apples for this batch, double up if you would like to enjoy more for later!)

  • Cinnamon

  • Nutmeg

  • Lemon juice

Note: I don’t add sugar to this recipe as I find the apple already has more than enough naturally occurring sugar! Pears also “pair” well with applesauce so if you want to adventure with other flavors try it out!

Tools

  • Medium Sauce Pan

  • Stick/Hand Blender (Optionally, you can use a food processor, blender, or if you don’t have the previously mentioned kitchen devices - leave it in the sauce pan and mash with a potato masher - it will be chunkier if you do it by hand).

Directions

Step 1: In a medium sized sauce pan, fill with water and boil.

Step 2:
Apple Prep
-Cut the apples into thick slices and peel the skins mostly off. You can leave them on if you so desire, or fully peel them. Remove the seeds and core then set aside.

Step 8:
Once blended, pour applesauce into individual containers or in one larger container. Remember to label & date - a good habit to practice in the kitchen!
